Wallander Analysis

This is an establishing shot, its filmed from a very high angle to give a overview of the setting. The extreme long shot gives us the sense of isolation and loneliness as we don't actually know where we are and there is nothing around. This gives a sense of concern and foreshadows to the future.
As the track gets closer we can see a car and two characters walking away from it. This suggests that something bad has happened as this is a very unusual thing to be happening in the middle of nowhere. Also, the car is of the beaten track which hints to the audience that something bad has happened. The characters aren't running, but are walking in a hurried pace, this suggests they want to get away from whatever has happened.
As we get closer the sound starts to get louder and more intense. What starts of as a natural wind sound soon becomes very loud, this has connotations of danger as it is a very sharp, sudden and violent sound.

We now see the first glimpse of the characters that we could see before. We can tell they are both girls by their hair, however not much else is identified as their backs are facing the camera so we can't see their face. They don't look back or don't talk to each other, this shows they are focused and have a very cold personality. It also makes the audience ask who are these girls? What are they doing? One of the girls has red hair, this suggests she's a bit of a rebel, this is also reinforced by her leather jacket with is a symbol of individuality.
We then see a shot from inside the car, it shows the audience that something bad has happened as their is blood splattered all over the windscreen. We can also see the two girls in the shot walking away from the car, they are still facing away from us to conceal their identity, they are also out of focus to give the effect that they are vanishing away.
We can just make out a taxi ID in the corner of the shot, this shows the audience what the character look like and what job he has. Their is also a juxta position with the man's injuries and the bird song and radio that we can hear in the background.

The two shot of the girls shows us what the characters actually look like. The girl with the red hair is in the foreground, this suggests that she is more important and is the leader of the two. They both have no emotion on their face to show that they don't care about what just happened. Their is a hyperbolic breathing sound from the girls, this shows they may actually be panicking even if their faces don't show it.
The extreme close up of the man's face reinforces that severe injuries have been dealt on him. His head is propped up against the steering wheel to show he has barely any life left in him, this also shows that it wasn't a car crash that caused these injuries as there was nothing for him to crash into, his injuries wouldn't be that severe and his head is uninjured on the side of the steering wheel.
This shot of the girls reinforces they don't care. Blood is visible on the girls, and we assume that it's not theirs but of the injured man to suggests that they inflicted the injuries on him. Also we can see a necklace on the girl with the red hair, the necklace is of a blade, this shows that she is a violent person.

The close up of the man's hand twitching shows that he is alive but this is his last moments as he doesn't have the energy to move.
We then see the taxi ID from before in more detail, it gives the man's name so the audience know. It is also covered in blood to again reinforce the violence that has just occurred.
The extreme close up of the taxi meter shows that the meter is still running, this shows that time is passing by and it is the man's last seconds of life before he dies. It also gives the idea that the girls wanted to be in the middle of nowhere so that they could kill the man without anybody knowing.
The keychain has a family picture on it, this makes the audience feel sympathy as we now know that he's a family man and obviously cares for them as he has a picture of his son with him at all times. The happiness of the picture contrasts with the blood splattered on it.

This is the last shot of the opening sequence. It's a close up of the girl with the red hairs hand, she's holding the knife that was used to inflict the injuries on the man, this reinforces the idea that she's the leader as she did it. The girls hand is covered in blood to further reinforce the violence. Also, the fact that they used a knife suggests that it was taken for a reason and they wanted to cause the man serious damage as it is a brutal weapon.
We also hear the high pitched sound from before, this along with the knife gives it a very sharp and violent feel.
