Brick Opening Sequence Analysis

This is the first shot that we see, it's of a close up of some feet. It adds mystery as we are not yet meeting the character. There is also music playing in the background, the music is slow paced and is a guitar. The music sounds like an old-western. While the guitar is still playing, we then hear a loud bell sound. This contrasts with the relaxed sound of the guitar, as it is loud compared the softness of the guitar. This could be foreshadowing about what's going to happen soon.

This is a shot of the main character. We still can't fully see his face, which again adds a sense of mystery to him. The focus pull also means that we can't fully make out his face. However when this fades out we can see that the character is male.

This is the first shot that we see of the characters surroundings. It's an extreme long shot to show the audience where he is, which is a sewer entrance with some water flowing out of it. We can also see a dead body, this prompts the audience to ask who is she? Why is she dead? How are they related? Also, the fact that he is crouched suggests he is vulnerable and scared, which could be because he killed the girl.

This is a similar type of shot to the one before, but now we can see more of his facial features. The low angle that the shot is filmed from is from the POV of the dead girl. This is an eye-line match of the dead girl. The fact that his hands are up against his face suggests he is shocked, as he is trying to hold back his emotions.

This is a shot from the perspective of the boy. The shot is a mid shot of the dead girls legs. The clothing suggests she's well dressed, however her skirt is ripped which could be because she struggled before she got killed. If you look closely you can also see that she has a bruise on her leg, this could be because she was killed and then dragged to the sewer. There is also a slow track into the girls legs.

It then switches to a slow track into the face of the boy. This shows that he is looking at her, it also seems that she is fixated and obsessed with the dead body. This could be because he knows her.

This is the first close up that we see of the girl, this confirms to the audience that she is a girl and that she is dead. However her face is still obscured by her hair, to add to the mystery of the situation.

It then once again cuts back to the boy, the camera is till tracking into his face. But the intensity of the track is increasing to add to the tension.

The close up of the girls arm shows that she lifeless. The way that the shot is framed makes the audience focus on the bracelet more than anything. This hints that this bracelet is very important in terms of the story and the film.

We then see this shot, which is a graphic match of the bracelet. This is when two shots both have the same object in them. This further suggests that the bracelet is important in the film. Also, the film looks to have gone back in time, which means that the section we saw before could be the ending to the film.

It then cuts to the title sequence. The word 'BRICK' is clear and simple to get across to the audience the title of the film.

This shot confirms that we were to right to think that we had gone back in time, as it says 'two days later'. The character that we see in the shot, we assume is the same boy that we saw before. The main focus of the shot is the feet of the boy, this links back to the beginning of the film, where all we saw was the boy's feet. This hints that along with the girls bracelet, the boys feet or shoes are very important to the film.

This is the characters surroundings. The use of the extreme long shot shows that the character is all alone. It also shows that he doesn't know who the letter is form as there is nobody to be seen.

This is from the the POV of the boy, it shows him opening the note. He does this very slowly to increase the suspense. The writing on the letter is very ambiguous, could it be a meeting point? This ends the opening sequence on a cliff hanger which is a very effective way of ending the piece.

Brief

My task is to create the titles and opening of a new fiction film, it has to last for a maximum of two minutes.
All video and audio must be original, with the exception of music or audio from a copyright-free source.
In this task I will be working with Shaun Hayden and Sean Kennedy.
